The United States Air Force has been gifting airforce equipment and airmen to local communities in Petaluma, California for over eighty years. The Department of Defense has contributed more than $1 million to the community since 1951. In 1951, the USAF made a donation of an F-4 Phantom II fighter jet to the Petaluma Airport which was used as a training aircraft for new pilots. In 1978, a KC-135 Stratotanker was donated to the community by the USAF. This tanker is used for refueling other USAF planes and provides essential support for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, the USAF continues its tradition of giving back to local communities through donations of military equipment and personnel. Recently, a C-130J Hercules from Joint Base Redstone Arsenal in Alabama was donated to Petaluma by the USAF. This plane is used for cargo transport and can carry up to forty tons of supplies per trip. The USAAF also offers educational opportunities through its Military Airlift Command (MAC) program which allows civilians with access to military aircraft for ferrying goods, passengers or medical patients across state lines. MAC also provides flyovers during major events such as Memorial Day or Christmas in order to show off U S Air Force hardware.

The Petaluma Air Force Base gift history began in 1947 when the United States Air Force donated a surplus C-47 Skytrain aircraft to the base. The plane was used for training pilots and flew cargo until it was retired in 1978. The plane is now on display at the airbase.

The first Europeans to visit Petaluma were Jedediah Smith and his party on their way from Monterey Bay to Sacramento in 1827. A small settlement was founded at Point Reyes Station in 1837 by Genesee traders under the leadership of Captains Dyer and Tomkins. In 1840, Wm. Fenton acquiredadds Rancho Petaluma from Manuel Nieto for $1,000 and began trading with Native Americans living on Mount Tamarisk and Point Reyes National Seashore. Petaluma is a city in Sonoma County, California, United States. The population was 24,711 at the 2010 census. Petaluma and its surrounding rural areas are considered part of the wine country region. It is named after a petal of the palm tree from which it derived its name. The first Europeans to visit what is now Petaluma were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew on their sailing vessel Nuestra Señora de la Concepción on October 14, 1542. They named the ship San Salvador because of the many petals from the palm tree that adorned the decks of their ship. Spanish traders called this area El Nido (the Nest). The first permanent European residents in what is now Petaluma were José Nieto and Manuel Nieto who built a cabin in 1824 on land they leased from Timbuctoo Indians. From here they traded goods with Mission Santa Rosa de las Pulgas (founded 1769) and other missions near Alameda Bay until 1853 when Mexico gained independence from Spain and annexed Northern Californias as part of Mexican territory. In 1851, Jepson founded Rancho San Rafael del Norte adjoining present day Petaluma in order to provide pastureland for cattle and grow grapes for wine production along with other crops needed for food production elsewhere in California during these difficult times. In 1865, Jepson sold his interest in Rancho San Rafael del Norte to John Sutter who renamed it Mount Diablo after one of his farming properties located within sight of Malibu Creek where he had housebuilt himself some years earlier while living at Redondo Beach, California
The town of Petaluma was founded in 1851 by George Augustus Oakland and named for his wife, Petaluma County. It became an incorporated town in 1872. The first post office was established here in 1853. In 1865, the first school was built in the town. By 1870, the population had grown to around 100 people. Agriculture began to play a large role in Petaluma's economy, and crops like grapes, apples, almonds and cotton were all produced here. The petrochemical industry came into prominence starting around World War II and continued to grow until the early 1990s when it slowly tapered off due to environmental concerns.
