Every soldier has a story. A few examples: 1) Sergeant First Class Tim Mahoney, who served in the United States Army for over 20 years, was deployed to Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He returned home three months later and started serving his third tour there when he heard about the September 11th attacks. Mahoney quickly put his skills and experiences from his deployments to use during the post-9/11 world, joining Task Force 121 as its first sergeant. He led the unit until its disbandment in 2006 after it was deactivated due to budget cuts. 2) Lance Corporal Drew Smith spent two tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan before being honorably discharged in 2009. After leaving the military, Smith started a business that sells both servicemen and women T-shirts with patriotic messages on them. Smith's company is now based out of Petaluma, California and he continues to sell shirts every year on Veteran's Day (November 11). 3) Private First Class Christopher Sweeny served seventeen months of combat deployment during Operation Neptune's Spear in 2007 while stationed at an airbase southeast of Baghdad, Iraq. After returning home he turned his experience into a business called "Sweeney's Coffee" which specializes in Equal Exchange coffee beans from Arabica beans grown near Baghdad. The coffee shop has been open since October 2007 and has attracted national attention because it is one of only a handful businesses across America that still serves quality Iraqi coffee despite all the talk about closing down military bases overseas (and other government-owned businesses).

The first Europeans to visit Petaluma were Jedediah Smith and his party in 1801. They named the hill "Hillsborough" after Governor George Hill's home in Portsmouth, England. In 1826, American Lieutenant Colonel James Wolkowicz built a cabin on Hwy 101 near Petaluma Creek for himself and his family as an early summer retreat from Rotterdam, Netherlands. Wolkowicz metamorphosed into Petaluma Township when he sold part of his land to John Sutter in 1851. In 1907, Robert Haines purchased about 50 acres of land north of town from Augustus Saint-Gaudens for $1 million dollars (). Known as "The Rancho," this property became Haines Field later renamed Sonoma Valley National Park (). With new agricultural subdivisions developed around it over time (most notably Orchard Road), Petaluma lost its agriculture importance but continued to be a popular holiday destination until 1975 when development took over once again(). During World War II many local businesses generated military goods such as gasoline and munitions manufacturing plants; these operations are now known as "local history museums." One example is Northrop Grumman's Hawthorne Naval Weapons Plant—now part of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar—manufacturing naval aviation equipment during World War II here at what was then called Riddlehoeft Manufacturing Company (). Today that facility houses two museums: the Ulysses S. Grant Museum of American History () and Raytheon Missile Research Center (). Today much of what used to make up downtown Petaluma have been replaced by high-density housing developments (mostly single family homes) with few if any public spaces remaining aside from a couple parks or open fields adjacent to Highway 101/Upper Sonoma County Regional Airport

In 1872 the incorporation of Petaluma as a city was authorized by an act of the California Legislature. The first mayor was George W. Beardsley (1872-76). By 1906 the population had reached 15,000 and within 25 years had grown to over 100,000. As Silicon Valley grew more important in American industry during the 20th century, Petalula's reputation dwindled among some entrepreneurs because it lacked good transportation links to their new jobsite: its only streetcar line terminated at Union Station in downtown San Francisco
In 1852, a group of farmers and ranchers in Petaluma founded the town of Petaluma. The town was platted in 1853 and named for Captain John Fenton, who had led a party that explored the area in 1849. The first post office was established in Petaluma in 1857. In 1865, the first school opened in Petaluma. In 1870, a train station was built on the north side of Main Street. In 1880, petalinga cotton gin began operations and became one of California's largest cotton ginners. The petalinga cotton gin produced goods that were shipped throughout California and beyond. By 1890, the petalinga Cotton Gin had been replaced by the nearby Redwood apt building as the main headquarters for thePetaluma Cotton Ginners Association
