Petaluma, California was founded in 1847 by John Sutter and his wife Jane. The town is located on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay and is now a census-designated place (CDP) with a population of 123,746. It has been home to many notable people, including author J.D. Salinger and business magnate Oracle Corporation CEO Larry Ellison. Petaluma was also one of the first towns in California to have electric lights installed in 1895. The town's history goes back as far as 1847 when John Sutter and Jane founded Petaluma on the east shore of San Francisco Bay. The name derived from an Indian word meaning "trees that grow quickly." At first, Petaluma consisted only of Sutter's house, which stood at the edge of what is now downtown Petaluma. By 1860, however, there were already over 50 homes in the community and it had become known as a leading center for citrus production in Northern California. In 1865, President Abraham Lincoln visited Petalula during his visit to Northern California and praised its fruit industry before departing for Sacramento aboard USS Illinois (BB 11). In 1894, oil fields were discovered near Petaluma and residents beganarta build drilling rigs to extract gas from the wells.
