It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is situated on high ground overlooking Sausalito Lagoon. Petaluma has been an agricultural center for over 100 years and now produces fruits and vegetables, nursery plants, flowers, lumber, seafood and other agricultural products. The earliest known inhabitants of the area that includes present-day Petaluma were Native Americans who used to live near the lagoon. The first Europeans to settle in what is now Petaluma were Norwegian farmers who came in 1849 as part of a group called "The North West Company." They named their settlement after the petals of a nearby olive tree which they saw while travelling through the area. One of the first churches in Petaluma was built by English missionaries in 1851. soon afterwards the town became an important port on Sausalito Creek due to its position at one end of a navigable channel between Palo Alto and Sausalito. In 1865 it became an incorporated city when its residents ratified a charter changing its name from Northville to Petalula . Today's downtown core was built during World War II along with much surrounding farmland as part of Project 86 . Today's economy depends largely on agriculture but there are also some small businesses located throughout downtown Petaluma including several restaurants and shops as well as several small manufacturers such as JBS America Inc., ConAgra Foods Inc., Safeway Stores Inc., PG&E Corp., Wells Fargo & Co., Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), Weyerhaeuser Companies LLC among others

The first Europeans to visit Petaluma were Juan Bautista de Anza and his party on February 17, 1775. They named their settlement San Francisco de Asís after Lieutenant-Governor Manuel Nieto of Spain who visited the area on January 24 that year. On October 25, 1846, Petaluma became part of California when Mexico won its war with United States over the Mexican–American War. It was here where Levi Strauss and Co., founded what would become one of Northern California's most famous companies—the Strauss brothers started making jeans in 1916 and eventually employed more than 1,000 people in Petaluma alone. The city also benefited from several large agricultural projects conducted by local farmers such as Wintershield Farms (now Verizon Wireless) and North Coast Oil Company (now Chevron), which increased commercial activity in town during World War II. The petrochemical industry reached a peak during this time but began to dwindle following environmental changes introduced after the oil crisis of 1973-74; Petaluma's biggest employer today is Dalian Wanda Group's China National Petroleum Corporation refinery. In downtown Petalula there are several theaters popular for events like music festivals and Chinatown evening market . There are also multiple restaurants and coffee shops located throughout downtown as well as several churches including Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and Saint Thomas Aquinas Lutheran Cathedral which are all within walking distance from each other or just minutes away by car if you take Caltrain to Hercules station . In early 20th century there were two small schools: St John's Episcopal School & Our Lady Of Loretto School (now known as Holy Rosary Catholic Schools). One post office operated here until 1918 when it moved to Hercules; later it became known as Midland Post Office #2. There were no banks or grocery stores until 1920 when First Nat'l Bank opened up at 10 N Main Street; later it became First American Mercantile Bank & Trust Company before being bought out by Wells Fargo in 1980 #2 closed down circa 1970 however some parts remain standing today like Midland Hall building which has been converted into apartments/residence hall
