Petaluma, California is a small city located in Solano County, California. The population was 8,895 at the 2010 census. The city is known for its wineries and vineyards. The first permanent settler in Petaluma was George Washington Hill in 1853. Hill founded a wagon road from San Francisco to Yerba Buena Cove. The town of Petaluma began as a stop on the road and grew rapidly with the discovery of oil fields in nearby Sonoma County in 1901. In 1916, Petaluma became an incorporated municipality with a population of 10,000 people. Theodore Roosevelt made Petaluma his summer home between 1902 and 1904 while he served as Ulysses S Grant's Vice President. Roosevelt used Petaluma as his headquarters for part of his campaign trail from then until he won the election in November 1904. After leaving office, he returned to live here until 1909 when he left again to return to New York City permanently after winning another term as president. In 1951, Playa del Rey residents voted to secede from Santa Clara County and become their own municipality under the name of "Petaluma" withoutifying Santa Clara County authorities or soliciting their consent; this action outraged county officials who saw it as an attempt by unelected petulant citizens to supersede them politically and arbitrarily change the character of their community (the issue still remains unresolved). By 1957, only about one-third of the original population remained within what is now downtown Petalula; most had moved away during that time period because of concerns over development around Highway 101 near town square (now called Park Boulevard). However, some local businesses such as Gullible's grocery store survived into recent times despite competition from new stores built along I-580 just outside town limits on what has become known locally as "The Strip". Today downtown Petalula contains many historic buildings that were not within reach whenowntown started developing but have since been restored or replaced by newer structures including: Santa Clara Hall Museum ($10 million renovation completed 2015), Masonic Temple #1 (built 1907), First Methodist Episcopal Church Building ($5 million rehabilitation finished 2013), Bank building #2 (1901) - all three are open for tours year round As we move further into this century there are plans being put forth for/in progress for redevelopment/construction within DowntownPetalula which would bring much needed jobs/economic stability directly into our community & furthermore provide much-needed tax revenue which will go towards critical infrastructure needs throughout our entire city!
