The history of Petaluma begins with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1769 and named the area San José de la Frontera after Mission San José de la Esperanza (now part of Santa Rosa), which had been founded two years earlier. In 1824, John Sutter discovered gold on nearby Sonoma Creek and named the stream "Petaluma" after him. At first, he only traded goods with other miners but soon began to build mills and other businesses in what would become Petalula. The town was first incorporated on February 15, 1852 by Supervisor George Wickersham from sections 1 and 2 of Rancho Carneros east of present day downtown Petalula. By 1860, many people had moved to Petalula because there were no mines or mills in Sonoma County yet. In 1862 local physician Drury built a home near what is now downtown Petalula for his wife and daughters before moving to Menlo Park to practice medicine full time some 10 years later Some early residents include: Captain Abel Lomas (1822-1907) who founded Carpinteria; Commodore George Scott (1814-1892) who commanded American Squadron off Cavalleria during Mexican War; Hernando Castro Baron de los Reyes y Martinez (1811-1890), founder/director general of Carpinteria Mutual Aid Society; James Fenton Heddle (1796-1864) an American Revolutionary War veteran turned banker who became president of Stanford University; Nathaniel Hawthorne (1798-1860) an author whose works include "The Marble Faireies" In 1872 William Tecumseh Sherman passed throughSonoma county on his way to Battleofthe Bulges against General Joshua Harney as part of his troops advancing southward through Northern California
