Petaluma, California is a small city located in the northern San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 17,049 at the 2010 census. It situates on Hwy 101 and is just south of Bakersfield. The Petaluma area was first settled by Mexicans in 1839. The town was founded as a result of a land grant from Bernardino de Anza to José Asúa. In 1851, John Rodeo started cattle ranching here and developed what would become Petaluma into a farming community with citrus crops and other agriculture followed over time. In 1906, when Alameda County became part of California, Petaluma became part of the newly formed Kings County. In 1916, the United States Postal Service moved its main post office from downtown to what is now known as Old Town Square in order to provide better postal service for rural areas surrounding the city center. During World War II, petrochemical plants were built in Petaluma and nearby Porterville; these are now long gone but their impacts on the local economy still remain today.
