The Marine Corps Deployment Gift History Museum is located in Petaluma, California. The museum has a collection of over 2,500 items related to Marines stationed in the area. The museum was founded in 1984 and is dedicated to the memory of Marines who have served or are serving in the Marin County community. The Marines stationed in Petaluma were first called the Fifth Battalion, Fourth Regiment of Foot (MILITARY REPORTS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY). On December 12th 1852, the battalion was organized with three companies and twelve enlisted men at Fort Mason. On October 10th 1853, they were redesignated as Company A, Third Battalion (MILITARY REPORTS OF THE UNITED STATES ARMY). They fought their way across Mexico and into California during Mexican-American War. When it was learned that General Winfield Scott had ordered all Americans out of California by November 1st 1850, Captain John Cavanaugh assigned his battalion to duty at Fort Tejon on February 24th 1851 as part of United States Army division under Major General David Hunter. Burgoyne's army arrived in Southern California on February 28th 1851 and march up San Francisco Bay towards Monterey Peninsula where they began their siege on April 3rd1851. BATTLE OF MONTEREY PENINSULA - April 3RD1851: Commodore Perry’s squadron attacked Commodore Bligh’s ships anchored off Monterey Peninsula causing great damage and loss of life but after nearly two hours a retreat was ordered for fear of another bombardment from Perry’s vessels which would have resulted in more lives lost on both sides. Aftermath The Battle Of Monterey Peninsula saw heavy losses for both sides with Commodore Perry losing about twenty seven officers and crew including five flag officers killed; six marines killed; thirteen wounded; one missing with only four survivors returned to America alive[1]. Aftermath Commodore Perry received credit for destroying forty nine American warships along with three British ships while Bligh received credit for only damaging one ship[2]. Captain Cavanaugh posthumously earned distinction as “Citizen Kane” due to this battle[3][4] In 1854 Congress passed an act providing for the organization within the Marine Corps of a detachment headquarters unit responsible for carrying out deployment gifts between Marine units stationed abroad as well as between Marine detachments quartered ashore at home stations[5]. This new detachment unit became known as Headquarters Company Seventeenth Regiment [6] which arrived at Quantico Naval Academy on July 15TH1855 where it remained until its decommissioning on March 14TH1957[7]. In 1880 Majors John Fenton(hereafterMajor)and James Wickersham(hereafterCaptain)deployed command company marines from Quantico Naval Academy directly to Camp Pendleton when that base became available following closure of Camp Lee

Petaluma, California is an agricultural area located in the Siskiyou Valley of central California. The population was 9,527 as of the 2010 census. The Petaluma River forms a part of the city's eastern border. The town was platted in 1851 by John Bidwell and named for General Mariano Vallejo, lieutenant general in Mexico City during the Mexican-American War. It became a county seat in 1856 and became a city on December 26, 1909. In 1911 it merged with neighboring Redding to form Redding-Petaluma County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2 square miles (6 km2), all land. As of 2009, Petaluma had an estimated population of 10,000 people who make up about 71% of its workforce and 88% of its residential taxable value.
