The National Guard of Petaluma was first organized on December 12, 1906, when the Petaluma Municipal League took steps to create a military organization to protect its citizens. At that time, there were no standing armies in California and the task of organizing one was complex. The first meeting of the National Guard was held at City Hall on January 7, 1907. On May 3, 1911, Governor Goodwin Knight signed into law a bill providing for the establishment of the Petaluma National Guard as part of the California State Militia. At that time, it consisted of 350 men and 10 cannons. It soon grew large enough to require an armory and main headquarters at City Hall. From November 1912 until March 1916, members served in various campaigns including World War I while also taking part in maneuvers outside Sacramento and Alameda County. This period is also notable for being when Captain John W. Mason became Commandant general with jurisdiction over all orders and movements within the Guard In 1916-1920 there were deployments to World War I (1916), World War II (1941-1945), and African American Defense Service program (1948). In 1920-1921 there was also deployment during Red Scare in America which lead to revocation of draft registration cards for many Californians The Citizens’ Commission on Military Affairs recommended disbanding or amalgamating guard units with other state militias but this idea never took hold due to concern about potential conflicts involving these organizations . On October 9th 1951 President Harry S Truman announced plans for the creation of a National Guard unit composed primarilyof Federal employees called Army Reserve Officers Training Corps which would be headquartered in Petaluma . On October 21st 1951 both units were activated under Lieutenant Colonel Byron Kapp who commandeered both battalions until his retirement in 1957 . The detachment was disbanded in 1957 but it is still remembered today as Unit 4-432 of the California National Guard.
Petaluma, California is a small town in Sonoma County, California. The population was 7,874 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Petaluma River and is bordered by Napa to the north, Santa Rosa to the east, Yountville to the south and west, and Healdsburg to the northwest. The first European arrivals in Petaluma were two brothers who came overland from Russia in 1845. They named their land "Petaluma" after a petunia they found near their original homesteading site. By 1850 most of what is now Petaluma had been developed as a farming community with haystacks being used as barns and residences being built on Apostles hill overlooking the river. In 1867 an act of Congress created Sonoma County out of Marin County which included Petaluma within its boundaries. In 1896 construction began on what would become known as "The Big House", now part of Town Hall Park. When it opened, it was one of the largest houses in Northern California and remains one of its most popular tourist attractions today. One major event that occurred during this time was World War II when many soldiers moved into Petaluma from nearby San Rafael Army Base. The town's economy increased greatly due to this military presence and continues to do so today thanks to continued development along the riverfront and growth within surrounding villages like Tomales and Guerneville
