Petaluma, California is a small town located in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The first permanent residents of Petaluma were two men from Russia who settled there in 1847, Russion fur trader Peter Fyodorovich Donskoy and his brother Ivan Donskoy. They named their new settlement "Petaluma" after a petunia they had seen growing wild nearby on Mount Tamalpais. A post office was established in 1849, and the town began to grow rapidly with settlers arriving from all over Northern California and the East Coast of America. By 1860, Petaluma had become one of the largest towns in Marin County. In 1865, Petaluma became part of the newly created City of San Francisco and experienced rapid growth as its citizens enthusiastically embraced their new city status and joined forces with other nearby towns to form a "Great Street Railway Company." The streetcars ran between San Francisco and Petaluma until 1902 when they were replaced by buses (see also: History of SF Bus Lines). In 1870s Petalula also hosted an annual fair that drew attention to its local food production which included apples grown by local farmers on public land near Point Reyes Station before being transported inland for market.
