It is part of the Modesto– Merced Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Petaluma" comes from petunias which grew plentifully on the bluff above the current location of Petaluma for many years before being plucked by a team of vineyard workers in 1868 and renamed Petaluma. The first permanent settlers in what would become Petaluma were John White and his family who arrived in 1853 from Illinois. They built a cabin on Big Creek as they traveled down country to look for land to settle. In 1857 they founded the town of Petaluma on high ground overlooking downtown San Francisco Bay. They named their new community after one of their many children - Anna Maria (Petty). In 1865 Captain John Cranch discovered oil near present day Petaluma and began drilling for petroleum products here. By 1870 there were over 50 companies operating in this area with 3,000 people working at various stages of production including refineries, storage tanks, and hotels. In 1875 President Ulysses S Grant signed an act amending thesplendid Oil Act which gaveoil leases to three men - Samuel Morse (founder of Western Union), William Vanderbilt (creator of Dodge automobiles), and Edward Eburne ( founder of First National Bank). This event helped spawn today's commercial industry with its vast fields producing "dirty" oil that still needs refining today
