The first time it was mentioned in the area was in 1954 when an American GI named Harry Dykes decided to open his own coffee shop. At that time, there were no real coffee shops in Petaluma. Dykes started out with ground beans and water from local reservoirs. He served soldiers and their families at his shop before moving on to selling pre-packaged drinks such as iced tea and hot chocolate. In the late 1990s, Harry Dykes’ grandson, Don Dykes opened the first full-service commercial café in Petaluma called "The Cup". It quickly became a favorite among locals for its unique style of coffee and pastries. In 2001, Don Dykes passed away but his son John continued the business until 2018 when he sold it to Tim Hortons Coffee Company affiliate Brett Eldredge. At Brett Eldredge's insistence, all of the original equipment from Harry Dykes' shop including the grinding machines and water tanks were preserved and kept on display at his new café until it closed down in 2019. Although tactical coffee has been around for many years, its origins remain mysterious. Some say that this type of coffee was inspired by World War II veteran George Patton's love of strong black coffees which he found while serving in Italy during WWII; others claim that it is simply a name given to any type of coffee with a military twist (e.g., Peet's Coffee). Regardless of its origins, one thing is for certain: Tactical Coffee has become an integral part of Petaluma culture!

Petaluma is a city in Marin County, California, United States. The population was 14,043 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Marin County after San Rafael and the fifth most populous city in Northern California. It is also the largest city on its own county line. The first Europeans to visit Petaluma were traders from Spain and Portugal who stopped there en route to Monterey Bay in 1821 on their way to America. In 1868, gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill which led to an influx of settlers and businesses into Petaluma. By 1870, all but one building in downtown had been erected or proposed for erection; about 100 people lived there then including 30 mechanics buildings that still stand today along Main Street (now First Street). A fire destroyed much of downtown Petaluma on July 4th1871 during the nation's worst railroad strike since 1861; only two structures out of 98 remain standing:the old locomotive depot (now known as the Western Railway Museum)and State Theater (now home to Regency Ballroom). However some buildings such as Mrs McCowan's Bakery did not burn because they were made out of straw-filled dummies that caught fire when hit by sparks from burning oil drums used by workers loading coal onto wagons outside; this event helped create an image among locals that fires could be extinguished without danger to anyone living within easy reach (). After Reconstruction petalingumanians eagerly embraced new technologies such as automobiles which quickly spread through towns like Redwood City (), Santa Rosa (), Tiburon (), Sausalito () and North Beach (). On July 14, 1847, Petaluma was founded by the Stephensons on land that had been granted to them by the Mexican government. The Stephensons were a white family from Georgia who arrived in California in 1846. They named their new settlement after petals of the local wildflowers, hyacinth and narcissus. In 1850, they built a small cabin and started trading with other settlers. By 1860, they had organized themselves into a town governed by a mayor and six Aldermen. The town grew quickly and by 1870 it had a population of around 100 people. In 1872, the Stephensons sold their holdings to Captain George Hearst for $10,000. Hearst renamed Petaluma "Hearst's Ranch" and continued to exploit its resources until his death in 1896.
