Pico Rivera is an affluent community located in central Los Angeles County, California. It straddles the border of Carson and San Bernardino counties and has a population of over 120,000 people. Pico Rivera was originally a small farming community established in 1881 by Spanish settlers who named it after the Andes mountain range that separated Chile from Argentina. The original village was situated on the banks of the river Punta Medusa, about two miles south of present-day Carson City. In 1907, Pico Rivera incorporated as a city under the name "Pico Rivera". In 1915, it annexed part of Carson City to its boundaries. After World War II ended, Pico Rivera experienced rapid growth due to its location within easy commuting distance of downtown Los Angeles and other major cities in Southern California. As one of the most affluent communities in southern California, it became known for its wide variety of upscale shopping malls, subdivisions with large gates and ostentatious redwood trees. Today, Pico Rivera remains an economically prosperous community with high levels of social mobility and equality among its citizens. It is home to several schools including Stonington School District #1 which educates students from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade; Edison Elementary School which serves grades K-5; Playa Vista High School which offers 9th-12th grade education; Henderson Middle School which provides middle school education; and Santa Fe Hall High School which offers high school education.

This gift is part of an overall effort by the USAF to commemorate 100 years of American involvement in global conflicts since World War I. The generosity and commitment exhibited by USAAF personnel throughout history is readily apparent when one looks at their deployments abroad. No one sector or region has been more affected by American foreign policy than defense contractors, who have had their hands directly involved in many wars across Southeast Asia, Europe, South Africa, Middle East and North Africa. This is particularly true during times of peace where U.S.-made weaponry was being used against other nations without their consent or knowledge; this was known as “proxy war” doctrine. Many USAAF personnel have spent time deployed both overseas and within our own country over these years. These individuals have made an immense impact on our Armed Forces through their service – whether it be through volunteerism or professional work with local communities they interact with every day on deployment sites around the world. In celebrating Air Force Gift History Month, we would like to reflect on some significant examples of how airmen have donated time and money to support our nation’s interests worldwide.

Pico Rivera is a town located in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 8,711 at the 2010 census. It takes its name from Pico de la Hoya, which means "little peak." The small mountain is located on the border of San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz counties and overlooks the towns of Pismo Beach and Morro Bay. The first Europeans to visit this area were members of the Spanish missionary group known as Frontera Separada who landed in 1769 onshore near what is now Pismo Beach. After landing they built some huts before continuing their journey northward up Oneonta Creek where they encountered Native American people while exploring this new part of California. In 1821 Antonio Lopez de granted land to James Waddell for $2 per acre (the grant made him one of California's first settlers). This area became known as Pico Rivera because it had a high point overlooking present-day downtown Pismo Beach. In 1847 Elisha Aspinwall bought 640 acres adjacent to Waddell's grant for $5 per acre ($40 per hectare) making it one of the largest tracts ever sold in California history. Pico Rivera was named after General José Gabriel Morrone y Costilla who led Mexican troops during the Mexican–American War in 1846-1848 and subsequently received an award from President Ulysses S. Grant for his heroism that July night when he led his unit across a river bridge over Anza Creek against overwhelming odds to cross into Californ
