Pico Rivera was founded in 1892 by Spanish Americans who had been forced out of their homes in Alta California during the Mexican-American War. The town was named after Pico Rey, one of three mountains that make up present-day Kern County. In 1911 Pico Rivera annexed portions of Monterrey and Tijuana and its name changed to Villa Pico Rivera del Norte. On July 15, 1959 due to the Gold Rush Classic race riots which took place throughout much of California, the community's official name became "Pico Rivera" once again effective from then on. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. The 2010 USGS census found that there are 2,597 people living in Pico Rivera (of whom 2% are Hispanic or Latino), making it an even smaller village than when it first formed in 1892 with only 350 residents! There is also no public school system here so kids have to go to either Chino Hills Elementary or San Lorenzo Middle School which are both pretty far away from any jobs/services either!
