Pico Rivera is a city in Los Angeles County, California. It is located on the Pacific Coast and encompasses the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains. The population was 117,871 at the 2010 census. Pico Rivera's history dates back to 1853 when it was part of Rancho Seco de las Pulgas, which lay within Mission San Gabriel land grant. In 1876, as part of a larger land swap with Alameda County, Pico Rivera became a part of Los Angeles City Limits. The name "Pico" comes from Spanish for "peak." The first post office opened in 1853 in what is now Pico Rivera. A sawmill and gristmill were built there in 1856; these were replaced by a flour mill in 1865 and another mill in 1880. By 1905, there were five mills operating in Pico Rivera - three flour mills and two lumber mills. The last mill closed down in 1984 after eighty years production. In 1896, lawyer Samuel Inslee donated 5 acres (20 hectares) of his estate to be used as an open-air park called Inslee Park; it remained undeveloped until 1975 when developer Donald Trump purchased it from Inslee's heirs for $100 million dollars ($). Pico Rivera is a city located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It is known for its beaches and lobster restaurants. The population was 61,513 at the 2010 census. Pico Rivera was founded on December 5, 1873 by Spanish Americans who fled to the area during the Mexican–American War. The city was named after Don José de Pico, one of the generals in Mexico City during that war. In 1886 Pico Rivera became an incorporated town with a population of 25 people. In 1912 it gained city status and had a population of 100 people. In 1950 it lost its city status but has kept its name since then because it is part of Los Angeles County and falls within its jurisdiction. The history of Pico Rivera began with small communities along the coastlines of Southern California that were used as landing points for Mexican immigrants who were looking to cross into America on their way to find work or education opportunities elsewhere in North America. These early settlers soon realized that they would need more than just beachfront property to support themselves and so they developed businesses ashore and inland in what became known as "the Ports" - Santa Monica, Ventura, West Hollywood, Long Beach - until finally making their home on pueblos adobadas overlooking the Pacific Ocean from where they could watch over their fledgling settlement while awaiting ship arrivals from Asia or Europe full of potential new customers and workers for their expanding business enterprises. By 1875 there must have been close to 200 families residing within present day boundaries Of today’sCity limitshaving settled therein since earliest days ).
