Pico Rivera is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 54,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The site of Pico Rivera was first occupied by the Tongva people and later by the Chumash people. White man Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo founded Mission San Marcos in 1592. In 1853, Pico Rivera was incorporated as a town within New Mexico Territory. On December 29, 1912, Pico Rivera became an independent city when it seceded from New Mexico and joined the Mexican state of Baja California as part of the Nordestadt Plan for Americanization of Mexican borderlands. Pico Rivera has long been a center for defense industry with its location on both coasts providingaccess to natural resources suchas oil and gas and military munitions production during World War II; however recent years have seen an increase in nightlife and tourism which has caused some economic decline. However, there are also several high-end apartment buildings built in recent years that overlook downtown streetscapes including Topanga Canyon Park (the largest shopping mall in Southern California) In response to community concerns about climate change and air pollution created by industrial activities near its boundaries redevelopment plans are underway to redevelop more than 800 acres adjacent to Interstate 5 along Highway 71 into new mixed-use development with public open space
The history of coffee is vast and can be traced back to the ancient Egyptians. The drink was popular in Ancient Greece and Rome, where it was used as an auxiliary beverage to provide drinking water for military camps. Coffee beans were introduced to Europe by the Italian navigator Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1513. He noticed that when he landed on what is now California, he found a place with large forests of coffee trees. From this discovery, the first coffee plantations were established in Panama and Peru. The Dutch began importing coffee from Africa in the 16th century, while British traders started buying beans from Spanish ranchers in 1795. In 1810, French trader Pierre-Joseph Poiret discovered Java's first Javapelo plantation and started trading with the natives for coffee. By 1827, more than 50% of all world production came from Java. During World War II, Dutch Indonesia became an allied kingdom of Japan after its defeat in World War I. Coffee beans were still being exported from Dutch East Indies until 1945 when Java was divided into two parts - Papua New Guinea (now Indonesia) and West Papua (now Australia). Japanese troops occupied both parts of Java during World War II and destroyed most of the coffee crops; however, some Dutch citizens managed to survive by smuggling beans across the war-torn frontier into Allied forces areas free of Japanese occupation. Coffee continued to be produced throughout the Occupation but only a small quantity reached Allied troops because most beans were seized by Japanese authorities during their raids into Allied territory looking for prized possessions such as tea leaves or coffeepots

Pico Rivera is a small, unincorporated community in Kern County, California, located about east of Bakersfield. It is named for the Pico River that flows through the community. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The first post office opened in 1898. The area now known as Pico Rivera was part of Rancho Niguelo Cuchilla del Diablo which Mexican landowner Manuel Nieto granted to his brother-in-law Juan Bautista Garza in 1859. rancho Niguelo included present-day Pico Rivera and parts of what are now White Sands Mesa and Rosamond Valley. In 1876 Mexican national Ignacio Palacios sold some acreage surrounding PicoRivera to James Halsey Cooke for $10 per acre. Cooke renamed it "Palo Verde" after a vineyard near his home in Ventura County where he grew grapes. In 1907 Samuel Morse organized a group of farmers who built a store and school at what is now the corner of Main Street and Baseline Road (now US 101). They named their organization "Pismo Rey" or "King's Domain". In 1911 they changed their name to the current one - Pico Rivera Independent School District - after statehood within California on September 26th that year. In 1951 local resident Armando Valdez donated land to build an elementary school south of town, which became Monterey Intermediate School when it opened in 1957.)
