Pico Rivera is a census-designated place (CDP) in Riverside County, California. The population was 3,816 at the 2010 census. It lies on the east side of the San Joaquin Valley and is bordered by Sleepy Hollow to the north, Corona to the east, and Murphys Landing to the south. The first European settlement in what is now Pico Rivera was made in 1848 by Captain George Barker of HMS Beagle under orders from United States General Winfield Scott. Barker's group consisted of 33 men and three women who landed on an uninhabited island near present-day Morro Bay. A post office was established at Pico Rivera in 1851, and it remained in operation until 1959. The early history of Pico Rivera can be traced back to 1827 when Mexican Mission Santa Ana de la Reina founded a mission church there called Iglesia de Nuestra Señora De La Purísima Concepción de las Angustias or "Church of Our Lady of Conquest". In 1860, part of Rancho Rincon Viejo which had been purchased from José Antonio Vasquez by Isidoro Moreno y Costilla became part of Pico Rivera following his victory over Spanish soldiers at Monterrey during the Mexican War Of Independence. In 1865, John Clements purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) along with all that would later become Pico Rivera from Don Francisco Lopez de Mena for $1 million dollars (). The land included most of what today comprises Riverside County as well as much of central California including parts now known as Borrego Springs, Cathedral City and Colton Heights. When Clements died in 1870 his widow sold much of his estate but retained 640 acres (248 hectares). Pico Rivera began its growth as a result of this new land acquisition with numerous businesses being established such as Jardín Botánica (), German Camps Frommer's () and A&P Supermarket (). By 1923 there were over 50 businesses operating here with about 10% growth each year according to local historian Arturo Guerra Jr.. One reason for this high level OF economic development may have been due to railroad construction that started in 1912 right through town center creating lots for development along Railroad Row (). Many small businesses closed down during Prohibition because no one could get alcohol across state lines without getting into trouble; however many reopened after prohibition ended thanks to prohibitionlord Al Capone’s efforts.
