The California National Guard was organized on July 16, 1849 with the passage of the California State Constitution. The first national guard unit was organized in Pico Rivera on November 3, 1850. At its inception, the regiment consisted of 60 men and 10 horses. The regiment served in various campaigns throughout California during the 1850s and 1860s. In 1861, when war erupted in America, the regiment mobilized and served under General Douglas MacArthur in Santa Clara County. Following the Civil War, service members from Pico Rivera were mustered out on September 14th, 1865. Today, there are two active units of the California National Guard: The 101st Airborne Division is headquartered at Fort Campbell in Kentucky and also has a detachment located in Riverside; while Headquarters & Headquarters Detachment for El Centro County is located at 9600 E Imperial Highway #205 near downtown San Diego. Additionally there are numerous Reserve components that have been activated since 1992 including an artillery battalion (75mm), an infantry battalion (3rd Battalion Infantry Regiment) and a cavalry squadron (5th Squadron Calaveras). A total of 2138 individuals have been honorably discharged from the U.S. military as members of the California National Guard since 1992- making it one of Nation’s largest military organizations statewide!

Pico Rivera is a small town in California, located on the eastern edge of San Diego County. The population was 17,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Carlsbad-San Marcos Metropolitan Statistical Area. Pico Rivera is named after Pico de la Hoya, an important Mexican general during the Mexican–American War and one of America's first military commanders. The town began as a small settlement on a ranch owned by José Antonio Vargas in 1881. By 1890, it had grown to include a store and two schoolhouses. In 1912, Pico Rivera became incorporated as a village. During World War II, Pico Rivera played host to various military installations including Camp Kearny and Camp Fortune near its water supply resources which gave rise to its nickname "The Valley of Chocolate." After the war ended, Sitka Sands Corporation built several factories in Pico Rivera which employed many local residents until they closed in the late 1990s. In recent years however this industrial area has been redeveloped into new neighborhoods with some remaining businesses open along Withrow Avenue such as RPK Szabo Kft., LLC., Floridian Café & Bakery and Bottega Veneta Italian Restaurant Today much of what once constituted Pico Rivera is now occupied by Naval Air Station Miramar within San Diego County or by other suburban communities such as Santee Meadows or Carlsbad Caverns National Park within Orange County
