The California Navy Department was established on October 14,1895 as the Naval Militia of Los Angeles County. The first ship to be commissioned in the newly created navy was the USS Constitution, which sailed from San Francisco on December 15, 1895. The long and arduous journey ended with the ship landing at Long Beach on January 8, 1896. The United States had entered World War I and the need for a large and reliable fleet of warships became apparent. On April 1, 1916, Congress passed legislation creating the United States Naval Forces Europe in order to provide naval support for Allied military operations in Europe. The first U.S. Naval Base at Pico Rivera was established on May 12, 1916 and it would serve as Headquarters for USNEurope until its closure in 1949. The First World War led to an increase in naval forces stationed in Southern California due to concerns over potential German attack along the Atlantic coast of America On July 5th 1915, USS Monitor (BB-62) bombarded Spanish Fort Harbor during what is now known as “the Battle of Santa Ana” after she collided with HMS Warrior (FV419). This event marked ashore action for American warships for the first time since 1853 when Commodore Stephen Wainwright relieved Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter during Manila Bay Campaign USS Olympia (CA-8) served as flagship of Cruiser Squadron One from February 1918 until her commissioning into service September 25th 1918 USS Enterprise (CV-6) arrived at Yokosuka Pier on November 26th 1919 after being launched from Newport News Shipbuilding Company’s Harpoon class dockyard USS Lexington (CV-2), USS Taney(CA-15), USS Saratoga(CV-3) & USS Cowpens(VA-1) decommissioned between 1951-1955; all were eventually scrapped
