Pico Rivero is Spanish for "little river". The name comes from its proximity to the now-dormant Rancho del Cielo, which was once one of the largest ranchos in California. The first European settlement in what would become Pico Rivera was by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo on July 26, 1542 when he landed on what is now known as Point Loma. He named it Puerto de la Cruz after his ship La Cruz which had reached him there during his voyage from Spain to China in 1541. After landing here and surveyed the area, Cabrillo sailed back upriver to Monterey Bay on November 14, 1542 and discovered land that would later be part of Alta California – today’s San Diego County and portions of Orange County – including present-day Pico Rivera. In 1847 Mexican land grants were given to 34 families who had settled around Mission Viejo along a small creek called Rio Bravo blanco (white stream). These grants included 8 square miles (20 km²) for $105/year with no right of way or title to any property other than what was leased out by individual farmers or ranchers under special rent laws passed in 1846-48. In 1850 two more square miles (30 km²) were granted for $60/year with similar rights but no title or right of way; these were known as Rancho Los Alamitos y las Conchas because they lay atop high cliffs overlooking both Missions Viejo and Isla Vista hills across the creek from each other. In 1852 an act became law creating Pueblo de Angeles off mission lands east of Courthouse Square; this Act also vested all grazing rights over Mission Ranch eastward into the hands of Mexico City so that it could be developed for housing purposes only; this created a great deal of conflict between Anglo settlers on one end and Mexicansgrove residents on the other end about how development should proceed within their respective boundaries since Anglo settlers wanted houses closer to town while Mexicansgrove residents wanted access to open land near their homes where they could hunt lions and bear instead of living beneath low cliff dwellings built by earlier Spanish colonists who did not have any such opportunities afforded them tanning hides or agriculture like their neighbors did.) It is located on the southern bank of the Pico River, about midway between San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz, and it was founded in 1872 by John C. Fremont. The community quickly grew to become a major staging ground for wagon trains moving westward during the Gold Rush period. By 1890, Pico Rivera had more than 5,000 residents. In the early 21st century, Pico Rivera's population is estimated at just over 1,000 people. Pico Rivera's history dates back to 1872 when John C. Fremont discovered gold in what is now south central California while exploring current-day San Luis Obispo County for mineral rights. He named his discovery "Pico" after his home state of New York andRivera means stream or rivulet in Spanish. The town was founded within days of Fremont's discovery by his followers on August 6th from land that they had cleared from forests near their Rancho de los Andes estate east of where present day Pismo Beach sits.
