Piedmont, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 7,755 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. Piedmont is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino County and has a total area of only 2 square miles (5 km²). The first European to visit Piedmont was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 12, 1542. He landed on what is now the east side of Piedmont Avenue in downtown San Bernardino and named it "San Diego" after his shipwrecked fleet sailing from Mexico City to Yucatán. In 1821, Charles W. Warren founded a large rancho called Las Animas in present-day western San Bernardino County west of Interstate 10 about four miles (6 km) south of downtown San Bernardino. The Associated Press reported that Warren also laid out streets and built schools and other public buildings in what are now central Piedmont Township and eastern Riverside County before calling it "Las Animas". There were no humans living there then or since; all animals were hunted by pioneer settlers for their meat or hides. In 1848 gold was discovered along what is now Interstate 10 near Byfield in Riverside County by prospectors led by John Sutter. This discovery led to increased settlement along I-10 corridor with new towns established as mining operations developed including Atwater (1849), Murrieta (1850), Fontana (1851), Hesperia (1852), Covina Heights/Pleasanton Hills/Modoc Heights (1853–54), Redlands/Rancho Cucamonga (1855?), West Covina Heights/Windsor Hills/Winnetka Heights(?–57)?
