Two years later, General Pershing presented a rifle to the presidio defense force. In 1898, General William Tecumseh Sherman brought a supply train into town and dedicated an artillery piece at Fort Point Park in honor of local landowner Jepson Gentry. The following year saw another donation when Lieutenant Colonel Edwin Sibley donated five cannons to the city of San Francisco for its military defenses. In 1906, World War I began and within days after America declared war on Austria-Hungary, they had also declarations against Spain and Italy which were not included in this original declaration of war because those countries were not yet states within modern-day Germany or Italy respectively! So American troops started fighting alongside their European allies all throughout Europe! One such soldier who served in World War I was Corporal Harvey Wienrich from Piedmont who would go on to earn several medals for bravery including First Class Distinguished Service Medal during WWI! From 1915 until 1918 he served with Company H 14th Infantry Regiment attached 3rd Battalion 5th Marines at Camp Pendleton out of San Diego County! AfterWWI ended he returned home but reenlisted soon afterwards so he could serve again during WWII as part of Company I 9th Infantry Regiment attached 2nd Battalion 1st Marines stationed at Coronado Naval Air Station outside San Diego County! He would also earn two Purple Hearts for injuries sustained while serving!! Finally after WWII he retired from service effective 10/9/1948 having served 51 years total!! Today there are over 46 military installations located throughout Piedmont with almost 350 active duty and reserve components assigned thereto!!! There are also over 190 veteran organizations servicing our military personnel both now and hereafter!!! These organizations have become some of our most important support groups as we work together towards common goals !
