Piedmont is a small, rural town in central California. The population was 2,829 at the 2010 census. The name Piedmont comes from the Italian word "piccolo" meaning "small" or "minute." The town was founded in 1864 by James W. Pemberton and his brother-in-law, George C. Dixon, as a cattle and sheep ranch on land that had been part of the Rancho San Bernardino Mexican land grant to Juan Bautista Alvarado. The first post office opened in 1865, and the first store was built in 1868. In 1872 Pemberton subdivided his land into homesteads, which remain today as villages within Piedmont: East Village (now Apple Valley), West Village (now Redlands), North Village (now Winchester), South Village (now Pleasant Hill), and Villa Park. The first public school opened in 1870 in what is now known as Villa Park; it was called the Indian School until1887 when it became Pacific Union School. A new high school was built in 1888 and named after James W. Pemberton; it replaced an existing elementary school that had been destroyed by fire two years earlier. That same year also saw the opening of the first water line to be connected to a rural community up north – this line ran through present-day Citrus Heights to serve East Village and West Village properties near Mount Hope Cemetery outside of town limits). In 1903–1904 President Theodore Roosevelt toured Piedmont with his Rough Rider Corps during their campaign for president; he stayed at Villa Park while visiting other parts of Central California.
