Piedmont, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 4,835 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area now known as Piedmont was first populated by Native American people who hunted and gathered plants and animals in what is now eastern Fresno County. In 1844, John Cohan settled at Big Creek Ranch on Big Creek Ranch Road after purchasing it from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $2,000. At that time no one living near Big Creek knew how to irrigate their fields or build a barn because they were not aware of how water managed worked. After years of hard work and many donations from friends and family members, Cohan's ranch became one of the most successful in the area with crops such as wheat, corn, barley, hayseed oats, beans and cotton grown successfully for export to Mexico City and other parts of Latin America. In 1857 George Armstrong Clark marched his army through central California during his attempt to secure possession of California for the United States. General Drake believed that this would inspire local farmers to start growing fruits and vegetables rather than relying on money earned from livestock sales which could be used only for military purposes or speculative investments like cattle drives across Nevada into Oregon Territory (later Oregon), which he considered part of Mexican territory under Ulysses S Grant's jurisdiction at the time. Upon reaching Piedmont he found that there was not yet a single store in town open up against possible raids by Mexicans led by Captain Jack Aubrey who lived just south of town along Big Creek Road opposite Old Spanish Trail junction on today's Cottonwood Avenue east side where current day North High Street meets today's Main Street according to historical records leading up until about 1870 when it appears irrigation ditches were paved over making direct travel between towns difficult if ever attempted). Just north east along present day Cottonwood Avenue west side still stands an old adobeadobe building built about 1868/69 known as "the White House"recently renovated with KQED documentary film Captain Jack Aubrey resided hereabouts previously prior to 1870
