In 1933 there was a move by then Mayor John Ferraro towards building a new high school east side along Fourth Street opposite City Hall which would eventually become Carleton High School while West Side High School continued functioning as an elementary school until 1965 when it too closed� thereby ending dual enrollment.� Fordham University also opened up shop on East 54th street just south of 4th Ave.� Enrollment increased rapidly due mainly because World War II brought many GI's back home so soon after discharge � some went onto college but most ended up working right away getting jobs like mechanics at Fordham University.� After World War II ended there was little need for schools eastside or west side so Carleton merged with Fordham Univ.� Now we have two high schools aka academies� one is Carleton & one is Fordham� both are terrible.�

The first batch of soldiers who served in the Mexican-American War (1846-48) were welcomed with a gift of rifles and shotguns from General Antonio L. Herrera, Commander of the California Brigade in the Union army. In 1861, General Miles Custer presented arms and ammunition to Colonel John B. Cooke, commanding officer of Company K, First Battalion, Californian Infantry Regiment at Camp Goodwin near here. A plaque on a stone wall in front of the old Post Office reads: "To Colonel John B. Cooke (1838-1920) From Generals George Custer and Alfred Terry." In 1875, when Captain John Sutter's company arrived in Piedmont from Stockton for reinforcements during the Battle of Benicia he presented them with an armory full of weapons including six cannons and over eighty firearms. Lieutenant Governor William Irvine also sponsored an appropriation for $1,500 for arms modernization in 1892 which led to increased purchases by the military throughout the early years of this century. A number of local businesses donated money or goods towards military training efforts during World War II including A & W Brewery which furnished uniforms for service members; Masonic Lodge No.2 donated ten canons; Mrs. Donahue offered her home as barracks; Piedmont Area Chamber Orchestra contributed violins and other equipment; Ralston Purina soap provided dog food rations; Playtime Radio Company contributed radios and antennas.; Goodyear Tire & Rubber made war bonds enabling citizens to buy supplies while supplies lasted.; grocery store chain Grocery Outlet gave canned goods to troops stationed in town;; Jello Hut Inc., located on Winchester Street across from High School donated jellies;; Stonington Presbyterian Church supplied candy bars to troops stationed here during World War II;; Mrs.-Edwards Department Store provided boxes filled with cigarettes,, chocolates etc., to troops stationed here during World War II.; general store Robe allowed shoppers into its Amos clothing department for donations items such as underwear,, hats etc., for use by servicemen stationed here during World War II.; Army post office on Winchester Street offered packages containing gasoline, oil filters and other supplies free if purchased before Thanksgiving 1944.]
Piedmont is a small city located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The population was 7,841 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Piedmont were members of the Spanish expedition led by Gaspar de Portolà on October 17, 1769. They traveled along what is now Interstate 5 and discovered rich gold deposits in present-day Butte and Fresno Counties. With its easy access to land, good water resources, and strategic location as a crossroads for trade with other parts of California, Piedmont quickly became an important center of early California society. A post office was established at Piedmont on March 10, 1853, and it expanded its operations rapidly. By 1860, there were over 20 stations operated out of Piedmont proper; by 1880, there were 30 stations throughout the entire San Joaquin Valley. In 1892, when Alameda County was formed from portions of Kern County and Trinity County (including much of today’s Fresno), Piedmont became one of its original townships (along with Bayview-Huntington Park). During World War II, many companies such as Ford Motor Company moved their production facilities to nearby Milpitas or Fremont during wartime shortages in Northern California due to the large population growth within that region resulting from America’s entry into war against Nazi Germany. However most manufacturing activity stopped after 1945 because technology had advanced so greatly since then that new manufacturing processes could be developed without reliance on traditional methods like hand tooling or power generation prohibited by regulations set during World War II ABNORMAL PRODUCTION
