The California National Guard was established on February 14, 1911 as the Military Division of the State of California. The National Guard has a rich history in Piedmont, California. From its inception, the National Guard has been committed to the defense of our state and its people. Today, the military division is responsible for 1 million active duty members and serves as an important part of our state’s defense infrastructure. As a volunteer organization, the National Guard enjoys wide support from individuals and businesses throughout Piedmont. The origins of the National Guard can be traced back to February 14, 1911 when two battalions of cavalry were organized under Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer to protect citizens in response to tensions between rival gangs in downtown San Francisco. At that time, there was no statewide militia system in California; each county had its own militias which consisted of individual men or women who volunteered to serve “on call” with their county sheriff or coroner at all times during peacetime. On October 15th 1908 Governor James Meara signed into law legislation authorizing the formation of a militia system within California for “the purpose hereinbefore set forth” (Public Law No. 7-206). This act created both local militia units and an overall force composed of infantry companies from each congressional district across the state which could be called up for federal service at any time during peacetime without providing notice to local populations. In 1912 Captain John Bremner commandeered an artillery piece from Fort Mason and traveled northward along I-5 where he stationed it at Stockton just south of Sacramento until September 1914 when he moved it eastward along I-680 near Modesto until his unit became available again in 1916 after General Pershing ordered US forces out of Mexico following World War I In 1918 Major General Clarence Kelley replaced Major General Pershing as Commander In Chief United States Forces West Coast Area and directed that all volunteer organizations must become federally certified branches within one year or lose their status as national guard units effective November 1st 1918 On December 3rd 1920 Major General Welch ordered all volunteers reclassified into Regular Army divisions instead utilizing existing Militia structure only Regular Army officers were authorized by law to wear blue uniforms with silver stripes while enlisted men wore green uniforms with white stripes while commanders wore olive drab fatigues . The changeover did not go smoothly however many Guardsmen felt they had lost their old civilian friends who remained behind . A large number deserted or were discharged before this transition could take place leaving many soldiers feeling left out . Aftermath some Guardsmen formed a Professional Association which later became known as The Golden Gate Warriors

Piedmont, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern edge of the Inland Empire and is adjacent to Riverside County. The name Piedmont comes from Italian for "hill country". The area that includes Piedmont was first populated by the Mono people, who continued to live there until 1847 when they were forced out of their homeland by the U.S. government under Manifest Destiny policy. The town began as a small agricultural community with few buildings other than houses or barns. By 1870, however, Piedmont had become an important commercial center due to its location along US Route 66 and its proximity to springs and other natural resources. In 1939, Piedmont became one of six cities in southern San Bernardino County that were annexed into Riverside County following passage of legislation creating Riverside County from portions of several larger counties. As a result, much of what is now Piedmont grew up around Interstate 5 and nearby towns such as Jurupa Valley and Simi Valley while downtown Riverside remained largely undeveloped. Today's downtown area is home to many businesses including Costco, Staples Center (the original home of both the LA Lakers and Clippers), Subway sandwich shops (including two owned by Subway) and restaurants such as El Rancho Mexican Restaurant which has been open since 1936. One major reason why downtown Riverside remains relatively untouched is because it does not have any high-profile tourist attractions like Disneyland or Universal Studios which are located in more developed areas such as Anaheim or Orlando respectively. alsoEconomic development has been slow in coming to rural areas surrounding Downtown Riverside; this may be attributed in part to lower judicial qualifications among local officials relative to those farther north within Orange County or east within Los Angeles County where significant economic development takes place
