Naval history in Piedmont, California began with the establishment of the United States Navy in 1807. The navy was established to protect American waters and sailors from British pirates. The first ship to be built for the navy was USS Constitution, which was launched on April 6, 1807. The navy continued its expansion until it had a fleet of over 200 ships by 1860. In 1912, Congress authorized construction of the first destroyer-killer boat, as part of an effort to deter war with Spain. The destroyers were built at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and were christened USS Arizona, USS San Francisco and USS Tehuantepec. In World War II, Piedmont played a critical role in supplying the Navy with munitions and personnel for Operation Neptune’s Spear, including providing ammunition for battleships such as USS Missouri (BB-54), USS Enterprise (CV-6) and HMS Repulse (LSC 3). As well as supplying troops fighting in North Africa and Europe during World War II. After the war ended in 1945, Piedmont became home to several naval installations including Marine Corps Air Station Miramar which remains today one of America’s most important airfields serving both military and civilian populations alike.

The townsite of Piedmont was platted on May 8, 1854 by J.B. Sutter and Ayer Cooley, under the name of "Sutter's Mill." It became part of California on January 14, 1850. The first post office in Piedmont was established in 1857; it changed its name to "Mira Mesa" in 1880. On July 1, 1862, Piedmont incorporated as a city with a population of 100 people. In 1905–06, local miners discovered oil reserves near Mira Mesa and began production; this led to increased demand for goods and services fromMira Mesa residents and businesses. By 1916 Mira Mesa had become one of Southern California's largest oil centers with over 100 processing plants and over 2 million barrels per day being exported from the city alone
