One man whorote extensively about his experiences during World War II is Lt.-Colonel Harry Elmer Woolcott Jr., who served with distinction as Commanding Officer (CO) Fifth Infantry Brigade Combat Team (5th IBCT) at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps Base from 1945 to 1948 and also wrote two books on his experience: "The American Soldier" (1948) and "To Serve My Country" (1958). After World War II ended, most residents returned to their farms or businesses until redevelopment began around 1960 with construction of new housing developments such as Northridge Canyon Village near University City Center and South Mountain Village near State Route 395/ Murphys Road/ Indian School Rd./ Old Ohlone Indian Reservation off US 395 east of Redding. A large number of African Americans moved into Piedmont between 1960-1980 due to white flight from areas such as Riverside County which were experiencing rapid growth due to oil exploration activities concurrent with blacks gaining civil rights opportunities following passage of Jim Crow laws in southern states beginning in 1937; prior restrictions on voting for black citizens continued until after passage of Proposition 13 Multicultural neighborhoods had been desired but did not happen because white flight provided opportunity for whites within those districts where they majority lived while Asians were scattered throughout Northern counties much like today's Eastside Neighborhoods outside downtown LA
