Pinole is a town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is the smallest of the six cities in the county and seat of San Bernardino County Government. The population was 16,711 at the 2010 census. The ZIP code 92334 is also home to much of Pinole's economy as it is one of the fastest-growing areas in southern California. The name "Pinole" means "place where potatoes grow." One early settler was Manuel Nieto who arrived on July 15, 1874 from Mexico City with his family and built a cabin near present-day Pinole Lake. In 1875, José Gomez becamepinoleseñor (governor) because he had been elected to that post by majority vote from all of San Bernardino County. At first there were only 10 families living in Pinole when it was platted as part of Rancho Dogpatch Grant No. 818 September 2, 1876 by Jens Peter Schleuning and John Hennepin under grants from The Mexican Government through Major General Antonio López de Santa Anna In 1896 Jerry Green bought some land east of present day Pinole Lake on what are now West Shore Drive and Sunrise Boulevard for $2 an acre which he turned into a citrus orchards that yielded oranges, apples, grapes and other fruit until 1915 when Prohibition made production illegal

In 1898, after years of petitioning by local citizens, Congress passed the California Constitution giving residents of San Joaquin Valley “a voice” in government affairs. This led to an increase in taxes levied on property developers and merchants within Pinole during this time period. These taxes were eventually repealed by Proposition 66 (the Statehood Amendment), which was ratified by voters on November 6th, 1912.
