In 1917, when new Route 66 was laid out through central California, Pinole became one of its original stops along that route. Pinole, California is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California. It has a population of about 30,000. The first Europeans to visit Pinole were the Spanish in 1769. The town was named for José Pinole Orozco, who came from Pinos Altos in central Chile. In 1853, the U.S. Geological Survey renamed the entire county San Luis Obispo after General José Antonio de la Raza y Costilla y Cámpora of Mexico City as part of a United States Congressional effort to promote stateshood for California during the Mexican War (1846-48). The townsite at the head of navigation Bay on Highway 1 was platted by Wm Higginson and James Bigham in 1854 and became an incorporated village under his name on February 14, 1860; it was renamed Pinole on October 15 of that year when USGS station Pinos Alto became operational nearby. A post office called Pinos Alto opened in 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued by virtue of mergers with other local posts on November 8, 1893. In 1886 when pinolenseñuela (the language spoken here) began to be supplanted by English as the medium of instruction within schools throughout southern California due to increasing numbers of immigrants from Spain coming into Southern California and Northern Mexico seeking work opportunities outside their home countries – this led to increased bilingualism among locals (Spanish speakers plus those born here), which also contributed to increased prosperity and growth for both communities over time, despite some initial friction between these two groups due to cultural differences. As early as 1916 local resident Carlos Valdez authored an article entitled "A History Of Our Town Of Pinole" which chronicledpinolenseñuela's history up through 1916; at that time all but one school board member spoke English fluently while most residents spoke Spanish fluently or only knew a few words thereof – bolstering community cohesion while also providing social services such as grocery store ownership and assorted civic functions unavailable anywhere else throughout south Central California at that time without prior notice or discussion between locals & outsiders living side-by-side inside what had once been dubbed "the best little town in America".
