Pinole is a city in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 27,773 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast Highway in the Central Valley of California. The name comes from an English place-name meaning "place of PINOONAGA", which may be derived from the Latin word pinus (a kind of Fir) and naga (a water deer), both of which are mentioned in early Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo's November 16, 1542 letter to his sponsor Admiral Fernando de Monterey. The primary crops were rice, vegetables, cotton and hay but also a small amount of oilseeds and fruit trees were developed over time including a citrus orchard. The town of Pinole began as a seasonal population center with goods brought down by ship from Yolo County during thegolden age of railroads in California. The first permanent settler in Pinole was George Waddington who arrived on December 15th, 1861 along with his brother James Waddington from Durango Colorado via stagecoach from Sacramento. He erected a frame log cabin which is still standing today at corner of 1st Street and 4th Avenue North near modern day High School’s football field. On November 6th 1862 Gouverneur Morris arrived with 2 other men from New York City bound for Sacramento via steamer “Saratoga” on their way to work as surveyors for General Doniphan on the Gold Rush Trail starting in Nevada . Heading westward they met an Indian party approximately four miles out from their destination when they realized what they had mistaken for Spanish gold (actually some high value nuggets). Morris immediately notified Doniphan who dispatched cavalry under Captain Nolan to investigate but found nothing worth taking and returned to Sacramento without further incident. However this event did spark off heavy competition between Californians for access to new goldfields which would continue throughout much of the 19th century
