There's an impressive history to gourmet coffee in Pinole, California. The first coffee shop in the town was founded in 1886 by Captain John S. Goodwin and his wife, Mary Alice Goodwin. The Goodnights ran the business until they moved it to their home in 1913. In 1916, Captain Goodwin's son-in-law, Harry J. Wolkowitz opened a small grocery next door to the GOODNIGHTS' Coffee Shop and continued the family tradition of providing fresh roasted coffee and pastries for customers. In 1954, Captains Goodwin's grandson, Fredrick P. Goodwin Jr., started trading as Fred Goodwin Coffee Company on Grant Avenue in Pinole. The company built up a large following for its high quality coffee and delicious pastries before closing its doors in 1978. During its time as a business, Fred Goodwin Coffee Company was known for its delicious chocolate chip cookies and other assorted treats. AfterFred Goodwin Coffee Company closed down, local residents began importing their favorite gourmet coffees from around the world at what is now called "Goodwin & Sons" Gourmet Coffee House & Cafe on Grant Avenue in Pinole (now part of Starbucks). This Continued success led to Fred Goodwin Coffee Company becoming a regional chain with more than 20 stores throughout California by 1990!

Pinole, California is located in the southern San Francisco Bay Area and is part of the greater East Bay area. The population was estimated to be 135,000 in 2000 and has grown to over 220,000. It is a small town with a large economy based on agriculture and fishing. The name derives from "Pine" and "Oliver", both of which were given to it by settlers in 1849. The first post office was founded in 1852. The early history of Pinole can be traced back to Rancho San Rafael de la Paloma, established by Mexican landowners near present-day Pinole Creek in 1835. This rancho adjoined Rancho Rinconada de la Salinas, also owned by Mexicans. In 1846, both ranches were sold to American citizens who named themselves the Sanchez family. Lorenzo Sanchez (1815-1892), one of these Americans, homesteaded what would become known as Rancho Pinole at an site overlooking the creek that he had surveyed for his landowning brother José Vasquez Sanchez in 1834. In 1850, Daniel Freeman bought an acreage adjacent to Rancho Rinconada for $4 per acre from Lorenzo Sanchez; this became known as Freeman's Addition (now part of Downtown). In 1861, following the Mexican–American War, California gained statehood andPinole developed as a peaceful frontier village with few amenities other than its three churches: Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church (founded 1865), St Joseph's Protestant EpiscopalChurch (established 1888), and Our Lady of Good Counsel Roman Catholic Church (founded 1889). A post office was established at Pinole on January 1st, 1863 under the name Pinos Altos; it served until 1870 when it changed its name to La Cañada del Norte Post Office due to competition from nearby San Jose City Hall which opened on October 1st that year. During World War II many African American soldiers came through pinole during World War I but they did not settle here permanently until after World War II ended because there were no white people living hereabouts then either so they took up residence elsewhere or left for new opportunities elsewhere when opportunity presented itself

In 1912 Swiss entrepreneur Hugo Kaufmann opened Zurich’s first cafe; Kaufmann’s Cafeteria quickly became an international sensation due to its innovative culinary programs and delicious espresso drinks. During World War II cafés were closed or rationed as part of wartime efforts to conserve resources; however, some notable exceptions include Café Berlin (opened 1943), Café Europa (opened 1944), Cafe Boulud (1944), Café Rêve (1945) – all located within walls destroyed by bombing raids during World War II. It is part of the Merced County, California Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Pinole goes back to 1849 when Mexican land grantee José Francisco Garza landed here and started a ranch. In 1868, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill in Pinole after he discovered gold near here. By 1870, Pinole had become an important milltown with many businesses and residents. In 1862, American Civil War veteran George Armstrong Custer fought his final battle at Andes Pass outside of this town - one of the bloodiest engagements in U.S. military history. After the war ended in 1865, many soldiers returned home and settled in this area including General William Tecumseh Sherman who noted that "pinole" meant "northern arrowhead" because so manymining operations took place hereabouts during the conflict

On October 25, 1849, after years of planning and discussion, the California Gold Rush began with a group of men led by John C. Fremont searching for gold in what is now San Francisco Bay. The rush was a huge success and within months, many people were working in the various mines and valleys around San Francisco. By December of that year, there were over 1,000 people living in San Francisco. In January 1850, Colonel John H. Sloat became the first U.S. Army officer to enter China when he landed his unit at Hong Kong to explore potential mineral resources there. Soon afterward, other American troops arrived in China to help maintain imperial control over much of East Asia while prospecting for new goldfields. In March 1850, General James Kenedy assumed command of all American forces in East Asia and ordered an immediate campaign against ChineseGoldRush materializing as the Battle of Canton Hill resulted in a major Chinese victory that forced most Americans back across the border into America where they soon discovered vast amounts of valuable mineral resources still unclaimed today!
