In 1916, Marines from the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines deployed to Pinole, California as part of the Marine Corps' 1918 World War I expeditionary force. The battalion arrived in late December 1916 and quickly learned their new duties ashore: security for coastal towns and villages; protection of shipyards and other vital infrastructure; and contribution to amphibious assaults against enemy positions. The battalion's first engagement came on Christmas Day 1916 when it was tasked with providing security for a small town on the coast of Santa Barbara County. In January 1917, they were again called upon to help protect a nearby shipyard during an amphibious assault against Japanese forces. The Marines were successful in Rush Bay - the first time they had ever landed successfully on land - and helped drive the Japanese out of the harbor. Since 1915, Marines from various squadrons had been stationed at Naval Air Station Stanza in nearby Monterey County. On 24 May 1917 USS "Aurora" (AP-3) received orders to transport Marine bombers back across the Pacific Ocean to provide air support for Allied troops engaged in battle in France. "Aurora" rendezvoused with "Stanza" at sea on 15 June 1917 but shortly after takeoff experienced engine problems which forced her grounded off Monterey Island until relieved by USS "Natchez" (AGS-2) two days later en route back across the Pacific Ocean to San Francisco Bay. On 18 October 1917 USS "Wasp" (CV-6) launched a squadron of Curtiss JN-4B flying boats from San Francisco Bay intobound traffic near Alcatraz Island while SS "Prairie Home Companion" manned by naval reservists conducted convoy escort duty insideSan Francisco Harbor perimeter Limit 1 & 2 miles northward or westward thereof."USS Constitution", flagship of Fleet Admiral George Dewey's 3rd Division joined Forces off Alcatraz then escorted Squadron intobound traffic while SS "Prairie Home Companion"'s escorts patrolled outside San Francisco Harbor limit one & two miles northward thereof."USS Wasp", flagship of Fleet Admiral Dewey's 3rd Division joined Forces off Alcatraz then escorted Squadron intobound traffic while SS "Prairie Home Companion"'s escorts patrolled outside [the] limits."All three ships retired safely without loss during this dramatic aerial show over Spanish Beach.(Dewey ordered all vessels involved not to approachSpanish Beach due fears that German submarines would be lurking there). Pinole is a town located in the Central Coast region of California. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and has been home to people since the 18th century. The first Europeans to visit Pinole were Juan Bautista De Anza and his men on January 17, 1769. They named it Rancho de las Islas (Island ranch). The original inhabitants of Pinole were three brothers who came overland from Mexico in 1820. They called themselves the Moros because they wanted no part of Spain's American empire. In 1846, General Mariano Castro took command of Mexican forces working against English settlers in California and ordered them to cross the border into Oregon Territory. When they failed to do so, he burned their villages and drove them out of their land. In 1850, a group of farmers led by John Cranch formed a company to buy some acres of land south of what is now town center for $5 per acre from Antonio Sanchez, one of Castro's commanders. The name for this new community was Ajo (river). They started building houses around 1870 and began calling it Ajo del Norte (Northern Ajo). By 1886, whenpinole incorporated as a town under state law, there were only about 100 residents living in Ajo del Norte. Some early businesses in pinole include Jardineria Aguirre which operated from 1870-1905; La Posada restaurant opened its doors on December 15th 1870 with Mrs Isabel Guerrero as proprietor; Agua Caliente hotel opened on October 1st 1888 with Edgar Fenton as owner/manager; El Rancho grocery store was founded by Rufus Humble in 1902; Lighthouse No 2 was built 1912 by Wm Tingey Jr.; finally Artisan bakery & cafe opened on May 12th 1976 with Linda Bingham as Owner/ Manager

Pinole is a small town in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. The population was 7,554 at the 2010 census. It is located on the central coast of San Luis Obispo County and bordered by Moraga to the east, Atascadero to the north, Lompoc to the west and Tomales Bay to the south. The first permanent settler in what is now Pinole was José de Escobar who arrived on horseback from Mexico in 1769. He named his land Rancho Aguada del Rey after King George II of England's grant of Rancho Guadalupe de las Casas in 1776. In 1821, some Mexicans working for Antonio Parra built a post called "El Cucamonga" (the Eagle) about 12 miles northwest of present-day Pinole on what is now US 101. This post served as an early warning system against Spanish incursions into our region. In 1846, Mexican squatters living near Laguna Madera started farming around present-day Laguna Beach and established two villages: Rinconada and Mariposa. One year later they applied for and received title to 640 acres (248 hectare) of Rancho Santa Cruz del Norte which had been granted by Governor Manuel Micheltorena to Ignacio Ortiz y Uribe on November 20th,. The rancho ran along Santa Cruz River between Laguna Madera and Tomales Bay for over 100 years until it was sold in 1907 to Wm Humes Growers Company Limited Partnership including Wm Humes himself who made pinole his main crops production center during this time
