Pinole, California is located in the Central Valley of California. The city was founded by James Fenton and named for the Pinole River, which flows through it. The first post office in Pinole was established on July 3, 1868, and was called Tenango. In 1879, a school board decided to change the name to Pinole after an agricultural community in central Canada that had been renameds North Vancouver in 1878. During World War II, many factories were built in and around Pinole including Ford Motor Company’s Highland Park plant; Boeing’s North America Paper Co.; Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works; and United Fruit Growers’ El Sobrante Plant. After the war, many of these companies left town or moved out of state while others such as Ford Motor Company remain headquartered there to this day. The city has undergone various transformations over the years with its population constantly changing due to immigration, economic activity and development changes along with some periodic high-level events such as San Francisco 49er football games or American Legion rallies being held here. One significant event that took place duringpinoles history occurred when Japanese Americans living in concentration camps within sight of downtown were relocated to nearby Rancho Bernardo during WWII pursuant to Executive Order 9982 which directed all civilian populations east of Santa Clara County into internment camps without warning or legal recourse should they choose not to leave voluntarily. This event has come down as one of the most controversial aspects of pinoles history and continues to be a source of contention today among those who experienced it or those who helped orchestrate it.
On October 15, 1848, a small group of farmers in Pinole Township, California started the first permanent settler colony in what is now California. The land was purchased from the Native American tribe of the Ohlone by Captain John C. Frémont and his men as part of their failed attempt to explore and claim new territory for the United States. The colonists sailed from San Francisco on a ship called "Eagle" on October 14th and arrived at sea four days later. They were met by friendly natives who welcomed them into their village with food and drinks. After disembarking they set up camp near present-day Petaluma Bay. The first buildings were made out of logs and skin brought overland from Sonoma County. A sawmill was built soon after to create boards, sails, clothing, tools and other supplies for the settlers. Over time more homes were erected along with stores and an churches which soon became important community hubs. A windmill was also constructed on nearby Mount Shasta which began production in 1851 providing essential revenue for the fledgling colony. In 1850 Pinole had a population of around 25 people; by 1870 it had grown to over 100 residents thanks to increased agricultural production and growth in industry adjacent to town such as logging, farming and manufacturing - all major drivers of growth over the subsequent decades. Settlement continued despite bans placed upon it by both local authorities as well as military campaigns waged against Native Americans living within sight or reach of settlements - this culminated with General George Sutter's disastrous 1847 expedition into central California looking for new lands to settle which led directly to mass deportations that emptied much of these regions forever (See: History Of The Central Valley).
