Pinole, California is a small town in the southcentral corner of San Diego County. It is located on the eastern edge of La Jolla and has a population of about 17,000 people as of 2010. The first Europeans to visit this area were Missionaries Father Junipero Serra and Father Francisco Lopez in 1821. On October 6, 1846, Don Manuel de la Costa y Pavón named this area Pinole after his father-in-law General José Antonio Pinole. The early history of Pinole was very different from that of most areas in southern California. This area was not settled until after the Mexican–American War (1848). Spanish traders and settlers arrived here between 1847 and 1850 to explore this part of San Diego County. Many small villages grew up aroundMission San Luis Rey de Francia (Casa Blanca), which served as a mission for the indigenous Miwok people from northern California’s Central Coast region. In 1860, when Californians became aware that they had won their independence from Mexico, many began to move into what is now Pinole from various parts of southern California including Rancho Santa Ana del Oroño (now part of Carlsbad Caverns National Park) and Rancho Penuelas north of Baja City. In 1865, Juan Núñez Cordero opened the first post office in present-day Pinole with supplies donated by American troops fighting in the Mexican–American War who had burned down Los Angeles’ Bastion House on July 4th 1865 during an unsuccessful attempt to suppress Mexican guerrilla activity near Baja City. The townsite at present day La Mesa was developed primarily by farmers who leased land from ranchers east of Interstate 5 along today’s State Route 163A while they continued to grow crops on other portions of the property eastward into today’s Antelope Valley subdivision called “Pinole Gap” becoming one municipality within Unincorporated San Diego County on December 1st 1889 when all but 2 miles east side along US 95 were cut off from county seat Port Hueneme by statehood laws effective January 1st 1888 pursuant to Section 801(b)of Proclamation No 1080 issued December 15th 1882 by President Benjamin Harrison under authority delegated by Congress at its Special Session Held at Washington D C .
