Pinole, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. As of the 2010 census, the population was 940. The name originates from an 1849 Spanish phrase meaning "place where wine is made". The town has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two centuries and became a part of Mexico after the Mexican-American War. After independence from Mexico, Pinole voted to become an American state in 1850 and was named for General José Joaquín de Herrera y Costilla, who fought in the war. Pinole is a census-designated place in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 2,451 at the 2010 census. It is adjacent to the city of San Diego and has a combined total area of 26 square miles (66 km²). The first Europeans to visit what is now Pinole were Spanish Missionaries on September 17, 1769, who named it Rancho de la Asunción de Jesus Christo. Rancho de la Asunción de Jesús Christo became part of Mexico after its independence from Spain in 1821. In 1846, the US acquired land east of present-day Pinole when Mexico ceded that section of Baja California to the United States as part of the War for Independence. The town was platted in 1865 by Captain George Armstrong Cushman and First Lieutenant James Prentice. In 1876 Edwin Way founded another business called Way's hardware store which survives today as Way's Hardware & Appliances. On July 24, 1847, California was granted statehood by President George Washington. The area now comprising the City of San Francisco was part of Alta California. On November 8, 1850, the U.S. Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act, which repealed the Missouri Compromise and allowed for slavery in territories acquired through the sale of property from Mexico. The addition of San Francisco to the Union gave it official status as a city on February 12, 1852.
