This influx of new people changed some aspects of local life but did not fully transform it into a tourist destination like it has become today. During the 1970s and 1980s there was significant progress made in renovating old buildings and developing new businesses around town such as internet cafes and restaurants that catering to tourists from out-of-state. However much more recent development has taken place centered around medical research opportunities at nearby Livermore National Laboratory which have drawn attention away from downtown Pinole for years; however this is changing with increasing development activity along Highway 41 near Livermore Village which forms an axis running perpendicular to pinolesite business district
