Pinole is a small town located in the San Pablo Valley of southern California. The town was founded in 1884 by General Mariano Vallejo and his wife, Porfiria Vallejo. The name of Pinole comes from the word "pinyon," meaning "a tree with thin bark." In 1886, General Vallejo purchased 7,000 acres (28 km2) of land in what is now Pinole and began to build a rancho. On September 10, 1886, he named the property Rancho del Rinconcito after a nearby peak. The first coffee farm in Pinole was built on the current site of Town Hall square in 1892 by José A. Gomez and Manuel Ramos. By 1898 there were ten coffee farms in Pinole County and 50 miles (80 km) east of San Francisco Bay. By 1905 there were twenty-four coffee farms with a total production of over 1 million pounds (450 kg).
