The original Carnegie Library building, built in 1907 as a Works Progress Administration project, still stands as one of Pittsburg’s most notable landmarks today. It has been used for public library services since 1951 and currently houses the Pittburgh Historical Museum which tells the story of its namesake community from pre-historic times to today.

The first record of human activity in Pittsburg County dates back to 1849 when prospectors discovered gold near present day Humboldt and Elkhorn Counties. The discovery led to an influx of miners into the area and by 1860, Pittsburg had become one of the most important mining towns in California. In 1881, after years of development, Pittsburg was incorporation as a town under the name "Pittsburg." Despite its size, Pittsburg has always been a relatively independent community with its own government and schools. This began to change during World War II when the United States military constructed Camp Forrest on land east of town for use as a detention center for Japanese American citizens. The camp caused great controversy within Pittsburg because it was located next to high school which many residents felt should have been used for civilian purposes rather than being used to detain individuals who were not enemy combatants. Despite this protestation from some residents, Camp Forrest remained open until 1945 and eventually served as a training ground for U.S Army officers during World War II. In recent decades, another major development that has occurred in Pittsburg has been along Interstate 880 which connects the city with other nearby cities such as Bakersfield and Stockton. The highway has also helped spur economic development within Pittsburg since it provides access to both rural areas withinPittsburgh COUNTY as well as downtown Los Angeles which is only minutes away by car or bus. This growth has made Pittsburgh one of America's fastest growing cities while also providing opportunities for its citizens to improve their living conditions including new housing developments such as Park Place Estateswhich are home to over 300 upscale homesand McAllister Commonswhich are known for their large shopping centers including Sears & Kmart
