Pittsburg, California is a small town in Kern County, California. The population was 1,853 at the 2000 census. Pittsburg is located on the banks of the Kern River, east of Bakersfield. It is part of the Bakersfield–Tulare Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Pittsburg were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and Francisco Vásquez de Coronado. In 1843, Antonio López Adobe was built by Rancho Los Angeles Mexican American settlers in what are today downtown Pittsburg and other parts of Southeast Pittsburg Township. The post office at Foothill Boulevard and Broadway served as a stop on stagecoaches from Sacramento until it closed on October 3, 1951. In 1876, United States Senator George Hearst purchased 640 acres (240 hectares) along the Kern River in present-day Pittsburg for $10 per acre ($128 million adjusted current value). He named his rancho "Hearst Ranch". In 1901 he sold it to Jens Christensen for $6 per acre ($120 million adjusted current value).
