The Coast Guard has been providing safety and security for the people of Pittsburg, California for over ninety years. The Coast Guard Station in Pittsburg was established on December 4, 1915 by the United States Government as part of a larger program to protect American coasts from attack. The station was originally called the First Battalion, Second Regiment, Coast Guard Militia. On October 1, 1923 the name was changed to the present day Base Station #1 in honor of Rear Admiral James P. Halsey who served as Commandant at Fort George Wright during World War II. At that time it also became one of four stations within the San Francisco Bay Area responsible for law enforcement and public access to coastal waterways. In 1951 Headquarters moved to Point Lobos and is currently located at 400 Townsend Street. Since then there have been many changes associated with Coast Guard Station Pittsburg including additions such as a Marine Barracks which opened in 1972 and a Helicopter Landing Facility which opened in 1984 which allows for operations such as search and rescue missions when needed quickly and easily from any location on or near shorelines up to 175 miles long! In addition, new technologies have been incorporated into our mission such as an Automatic Identification System (AIS) system that allows us to track vessels and their owners through satellite imagery; Dive Control Centers which provide customer service during dives; Lifejackets which are given out free to all visitors during open water conditions; Photographs taken aboard Ships while underway are now stored on-board our Vessel Operations Center where they can be viewed anytime anywhere! As we continue our tradition of providing quality services while ensuring community safety, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize those individuals who have played an important role in making our coast guardjenison possible today including Captain Don Armstrong who has overseen many expansions at our station over the years including installation of AIS systems; Lt. Commander Dave D’Angelo who has led assaults against piracy off Southern California beaches; Petty Officer 3rd Class Shawna Wexler whose selfless dedication goes above and beyond every day she is assigned here at Station #1; Acting Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Blevins who helps manage resources during high demand periods such as Christmas season; Warrant Officer 3rd Class John Lasker whose dedication knows no bounds when it comes time for him to deploy offshore...the list goes on and on! It is truly amazing how much value these individuals bring not only unto their unit but also unto society as a whole!

The town later became known as Pittsburg after General George Washington's army stopped there on their way to San Diego in 1769. Pittsburg was founded on April 10, 1853, by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Sarah Auld from Missouri. They named it for General George Washington and his army who had paused at the base of Mount Hamilton during their march to San Diego. At that time, Mount Hamilton was also called "Hahwahkamutimit" or "The Place Where Chiefs Dwell". Pittsburgh grew rapidly due to its location along wagon routes between San Francisco and Los Angeles which led to its growth into a major railroad stopover community with over 100 businesses by 1870. In 1907, when Pittsburg annexed Hanford City, it became the second largest city in Kern County after Bakersfield with a population of 953 people
