Pittsburg is the county seat of San Bernardino County. Pittsburg began as a small post office called Emmitsburg on March 22, 1868. It became Pittsburg on October 15, 1870 when it was incorporated as a town. On November 10, 1876 the name of the town changed to Pittsburg after United States Senator George W. Pitts (R-Ky.). The first store in Pittsburg opened on December 3, 1876 and still stands today. In 1907 there were 11 businesses in town with a population of 134 people; by 1914 there were over 30 businesses with a population of 1,500 people and the downtown district had been built up to include more than 100 storefronts. By 1920 there were over 150 buildings in downtown Pittsburg with a population of 3,000 people; by 1930 all but one building had been replaced or retrofitted with air conditioning and electrification The 1940 census showed that the total number of residents in both towns had reached parity at 17,681; however only 2% growth remained until 1990 due to annexation by neighboring Riverside County which then lost its status as an independent municipality In 1990 development started again for Pittsburg when portions of Riverside Countys eastern edge were annexed into the new city proper including much older neighborhoods such as East End which became known as South Hill In 2000 construction began on what would become River Ranch Drive/ annexing much older neighborhoods eastward along Interstate 15 including Old Towne which has since been torn down to make way for new housing developments In 2002 Mayor John Suthers announced plans to build an expressway through the community connecting I-15 northbound with I-10 southbound just east of River Ranch Drive/ making it easy access from Chino Hills and Pomona

The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military bases and production plants. The war also led to increased traffic and pollution within the city limits. This led to a growing number of residents moving out of Pittsburg over the years, contributing to its decline during the postwar period. Pittsburg's rich history began with its role as a transportation hub for Southern California during the Gold Rush era. The area served as a staging ground for freight and passenger trains running between downtown Los Angeles and various mining sites throughout Northern California; this route was known as "the Main Street of America." In 1873, two years after completion of Interstate 10 (later US 101), Pittsburg became home to one of southern California's first commercial airports when Calumet Airport opened (/RNA pattern). Today, both located within downtown Pittsburg are considered tourist destinations popular with locals and tourists alike due to their diverse architecture and interesting history – including several buildings that have been listed on National Register Of Historic Places (NRHP).
