Pittsburg is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 20,539 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and the second-largest city in California after San Francisco. Pittsburg is located on both sides of the Kern River. The first European to visit what is now Pittsburg was Padre Juan Crespí who landed there on October 14, 1769 on an Spanish ship called "Nuestra Señora de la Concepción". On July 3, 1847, US Commodore George Vancouver anchored his squadron of ships at anchor off shore of present day Pittsburg to await news from Mexico concerning the Chihuahuan Desert Expedition under General Zachary Taylor which had failed to find a route overland to Texas. Commodore Vancouver's men were entertained by local citizens and their families until they left for their next port of call. In 1848 John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill where he processed agricultural goods and served as mayor from 1849-1851 and again from 1861-1863. In 1853 John Sutter donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church in memory of his father (1768-1853) Jens Jakob Sutter (1775–1850), one of only two Swedes among twenty children born to Peter Gustafsson (1760–1837) and Johanna Magdalena Freytag (1767–1823). Beginning in 1854 religious services were held here every Tuesday morning starting at 7:00am until 10:00am by Rev. Drury Wagoner with Revs Luther Burbank (Dentist), Augustus Kelley (Dentist), William Howes(Dentist), Ebenezer Fenton(Dentist), James Hutton( dentist ), Lorenzo Snowe( druggist ), Asa Gray( painter ). Reverend Drury Wagoner also served as pastor from 1860 until his death in 1870 followed by Revs Luther Burbank Jr., Augustus Kelley III., William Howes II., Ebenezer Fenton II., James Hutton I.. In 1865 Father Edward Bogue became pastor with additions including Revs Emanuel Neumann & Julius Fischer church bellringers . The First Methodist EpiscopalChurch building was dedicated on November 2nd 1865 . Father Bogue taught Sunday school beginning in 1870 before leaving for good in 1880 . Three years later - on May 25th 1886 – Father Edward Bogue died suddenly while serving as Pastor Emeritus following more than fifty years service within that denomination The current Cathedral built between 1924 and 1928 has been named Forgiveness Cathedral following its dedication ceremony on September 24th 1990 by then Mayor Tom Bradley On December 15th 1923 a fire destroyed most of downtown Pittsburg killing one person and causing $100,000 worth of damage Pittsburg experienced another devastating fire occurred during World War II when incendiary bombs dropped by Japanese bombers destroyed many homes including the original cathedral burning down completely destroying much valuable property In 1951 City Council declared it a dry season so all fires were put out with no new fires allowed through January 1st 1952 Pittsburg went back into business as usual with limited services taking place during this time due to lack of firefighters however some services did resume such as Christmas party in 1954
