Pittsburg was founded in 1853 by John C. Frémont and named for his father, William Pittsfield Frémont. The first post office in Pittsburg was established on December 12, 1853, by George Waddell. The first store open in town was the Pacific Telegraph Station which operated from December 12 to February 25, 1854. In 1865, John Ayer opened the first hotel here and continued to serve as its proprietor until it burned down in 1888. By 1870, there were five stores and ninety-eight residents within Pittsburg limits; however this number rapidly dwindled during the next several decades as new settlers arrived and businesses closed or Beaumont Avenue became too commercialized for small farmers to maintain operation on their land holdings. In 1906– 1907 an act of Congress designated San Joaquin County as a recreational area with the enactment of Section 10 of that year's federal election laws – one of many such legislations designed to promote agricultural production and development throughout California during the Belle Epoque period (1873-1913). This legislation had two goals: To provide recreation opportunities for Americans living near large urban areas while also promoting industrial activity over rural pursuits; and to encourage growth along Agricultural Route 66 extending from Sacramento through Stockton into central California after having been truncated at Bakersfield due to engineering considerations favoring railroads over roads when ranching proved more practicable than wagon travel over long distances eastward from Sacramento inland into central Valley . The name "Pittsburg" came from nearby Pitts Grove, where McCormick's parents had grown up. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century due to its position on the railroad along the Central Valley route between Bakersfield and Stockton; it became one of the most important agricultural towns in California. In 1915, Pittsburg erected a large brick courthouse which remain standing today. In 1923, Pittsburg incorporated as a city; it has since been renamed Pittsburg several times (e.g., 1940-1945, 1959-1965).
