At that time, it was one of the most important missions in Southern California because it wasadjacent to both Bakersfield and Stockton. In 1847, the United States acquired Rancho Cucamonga from Mexican governor Manuel Micheltorena for $5,000 In 1853, railroad developers built the first line through Kern County from Stockton to Tulare via Pittsburg and other places including Porterville and Bakersfield. The line helped develop Pittsburg as a commercial center with numerous mills and businesses established during this time including Brewster Brewing Company (1854), Humble Clothing Store (1860), Whetstone Coal Mining Company (1878), Atherton Creamery (1910) and many more The post office at Pittsburg was opened on July 14th, 1870 by Jno. Fenton Mather with mail service arriving twice weekly from Tulare until 1909 when it became a general mail station serving all of Kern County

However, soon enough it came to be known as Pittsburg because that is where John Cushing worked for many years as a cotton ginner before becoming Mayor in 1907. The City began rapid growth following World War II when numerous veteran returning home brought their families back to Pittsburg from all over America via Interstate 80 (now I-5). With so many new arrivals, schools were built throughout the city including three high schools – Central High School (1948), Western High School (1962), and Southern Pacific Junior College (1963). In 1966 construction began on Market Street which served as the first major shopping center in town since before incorporation date – today it remains one of downtown's most popular tourist destinations with more than 20 restaurants/cafes/bars/conveniences stores located within easy walking distance of each other!
