The Marines of the Pittsburg Marine Depot have a rich history that dates back to World War I. The depot was opened in 1917 and was used as a training ground for Marines. During World War II, it became the nucleus of the first Marine Corps Recruit Depot in the United States. In 1951, it became the first Marine Corps Base east of San Francisco. From then until its closure in 1975, it served as home to both Headquarters Marine Corps andli- stered Marines. The depot closed its doors after 35 years of service on December 15, 1975. In 1852, an immigration depot was built on Second Avenue near what is now First Street in order to screen immigrants for eligibility for citizenship under the Mexican American War Act of1846. After California became a Ulysses S Grant country following the Civil War it lost most of its Mexican population which caused businesses located there such as Jardine & Evans (later part of Nabisco) closed their doors; however, lumber mills continued operations until after World War II when automated machines replaced human workers becoming more prevalent throughout various industries including construction throughout much of North America resulting in job losses along with pollution from production sites which often resulted in air quality problems within city limits that have persistently been cited by residents ever since
