Pittsburg, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 3,613 at the 2010 census. Pittsburg has been a small community for over one hundred years and it is one of the oldest incorporated municipalities in Kern County. The first settler in Pittsburg was James Caird who arrived in 1848. He built his home on the site of what is now the High School and he named it after his native city of Glasgow, Scotland. Other early settlers included John Atherton and James Sayers. In 1853, Nathaniel Currell bought 640 acres of land adjacent to present-day Pittsburg from Jens Christensen for $1,000. Currell established a mill there which produced flour until 1862 when prohibition made such production prohibitively expensive. In 1865, George Fenton erected an adobe building on what is now Spring Street which served as the first schoolhouse in Pittsburg. It was replaced by a log cabin serving as the first courthouse in 1870 and again from 1886 until 1907 when it became known as the District Court House due to its location at Spring and Elm Streets near downtown Pittsburg. In 1911, Clarence White purchased 1/2interest in The Lumber Company of America from Jens Christensen for $5,000 cash that he invested with other investors including banker William Teller during World War I efforts to procure lumber supplies for American troops overseas. From 1916 to 1919 White directed shipments of lumber from local mills into occupied Europe via truckloads through San Francisco Bay Bridge before being intercepted by German forces en route and confiscated at sea off Alcalá de Henares on May 5th 1918; these events are commemorated by an annual event called "Operation Tugboat" held at Beatrice Harbor near San Jose every July 4th since then called "Clarence White's Festival". In 1922 Clyde Hargrave opened his grocery store at Third Street and Elm Avenue where he continued operation until 1974 when he sold all interests in The Hargrave Store to Harry Pacelli who operated it until 1987 when it closed down due to fire damage caused by vandals; this event is also commemorated annually with "HARRY PACELLI'S DAY" held at Beatrice Harbor every July 4th since then called "Clyde Hargrave's Day".
