The United States Navy has been present in Pittsburg, California since the 1800s. The first naval engagement in the area occurred on October 9, 1848 when Commodore David Dixon of the United States squadron attacked and burned a Mexican Landing at Yerba Buena Island. At that time, the Bay Area was part of Mexico and not under American jurisdiction. In 1917, USS Constitution sailed into San Francisco Bay to provide cover for U.S. troops invading World War I from Europe.
