The first Europeans to visit what is now Pittsburg were members of the De Anza Expedition led by Don Fernando de Alvarado in 1769. They named this place Santa Rosa after Jesus Christ's birthplace in Palestine. In 1836, John Cohan bought land from Rancho Los Alamos near present-day downtown Pittsburg and developed it into a town named after him, Cohan's Townsite. In 1856, when voters passed an act creating San Joaquin County, they chose to name it for General James Halleck who had played an important role in their county's creation. In 1886, iron ore deposits were discovered north of present-day Pittsburg and development began around these new mines. The town grew rapidly because of its proximity to these resources and was incorporated as part of San Joaquin Countys newly created city government on February 16, 1888. By 1910, Pittsburg had a population of 483 with over 50 businesses; it also boasted two hotels and several churches." During World War II much production went into munitions at the steel plants in nearby La Valle and Tracy; these plants produced some 3 million tons (5% of world output) of aluminum oxide which was used to make bombs and other munitions during that war effort Pittsburgh Steel Works closed down in 1962 but reopened as part of ArcelorMittal Pittsburgh in 1984 before closing again in 1993 due to economic troubles Pittsburgh City Council voted on November 15th 2009 unanimously to annex all or part of neighboring La Plata Valley which includes parts of Coryell Township including Villa Park annexed by Pittsburgh on December 30th 2009 . This annexation will result in residents living about 1 mile southeast from our downtown core while those living east or west will continue to do so currently
