In 1871, the Northern Pacific Railroad arrived in Pittsburg and began carrying passengers and goods between Bakersfield and Sacramento. This led to the development of a railroad town that still exists today - one of the most important transportation hubs in Kern County. The first post office in Pittsburg opened on October 15, 1868. The name "Pittsburg" was chosen because it sounded like "Pittsburgh," an American village located east of Boston where General George Washington birthplace was located. By 1880, the population had increased to 2,000 people and by 1900 it had reached 5,000 people; however World War II interrupted these growth rates until 1950 when the war brought about new demand for munitions production within Kern County which led to an increase in population again reaching 10,000 by 1960 census figures due to migration from other parts of California including Bakersfield (then part of Los Angeles) during that time period In 1975-1976 redevelopment took place on downtown streetscape with heavy investment coming from local businesses who saw opportunity as redevelopment took place around them This included demolition or renovation of many buildings dating back over 100 years including some original hotel/motel rooms
